Roofing FAQs

  • How do I know if my roof needs to be replaced?

Common signs that might suggest the need of a new roof is if you notice excessive granules in your gutters and/or downspouts, shingles curling up, and/or leaks. Most roofs can last between 20 to 30 years, so if you are within that time period and are seeing any of those signs, you are probably due for a new roof. Additionally, if a severe storm with high winds and/or hail comes through, it is worth having us come out to check for any damage.

  • What steps are involved in the roof replacement process?

We start by protecting your landscaping and preparing the work area. Your old roofing materials are then removed, and the roof decking is inspected to make sure everything underneath is in good condition. Any damaged or rotted wood that is found will be replaced. From there, we install the necessary waterproofing materials and underlayment before installing your new shingles and replacing flashing where needed.

Once the roof is complete, we perform a thorough cleanup, including using a powerful magnet to pick up stray nails around your property. Before installation day, we’ll also ask that vehicles be moved out of the garage and driveway to ensure that we have plenty of room to work safely and efficiently.

  • Do you tear off the old roof or install on top of it?

We always tear off the old roof, as it allows us to inspect the plywood beneath it to check for rot. If there is rot, we will replace the plywood before we begin installation of your roof.

  • How long does installation take?

Most roofs on residential homes can be replaced in one day. Churches or larger buildings or homes may take 2 days.

  • What if it rains during the roof installation?

We have very large tarps in the event that it does start to rain. We watch the weather closely to ensure that we do not install on a day that rain is forecasted, but here in Missouri, weather is very unpredictable.

  • What warranties will my new roof come with?

We install IKO Dynasty and Nordic shingles, both of which come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. The first 15 years are covered at 100% on qualifying manufacturing defects, giving our homeowners strong protection and peace of mind. After that, the warranty continues on a prorated basis.

In addition to the manufacturer's warranty, we here at Home Comfort Exteriors stand behind our work with a 25-year workmanship warranty. We take pride in doing the job right and we want you to feel confident knowing that your investment in your home is protected for years to come.

  • Do you work with insurance claims?

Yes, we have a lot of experience working with insurance claims. We can go over your insurance documentation with you to make sure that your insurance covers all the required items they need to. There are often instances where insurance has missed required code upgrade items, such as drip edge, and we can help to make sure that they cover them. At the end of the day, we are on your side and will advocate for everything that needs to be replaced.

  • How do I know if I need a roofing permit?

In most cities, a permit is not required for roofing replacements, but if your city does call for one, we will obtain it for you.

  • Why are there black streaks on my roof?

Those black streaks are usually caused by a type of algae that can grow on asphalt shingles over time. While it doesn’t typically damage the roof right away, it can make the roof look older and less attractive than it really is. The shingles we install are designed to help prevent this issue. They contain copper-infused granules that inhibit algae growth and help keep your roof looking cleaner for longer. They also come with a warranty that protects against algae discoloration, giving you added peace of mind.

  • What is the difference between ridge vents and box vents?

The biggest difference comes down to how they ventilate your attic. Ridge vents run along the entire peak of the roof, allowing air to escape evenly across the roofline. Box vents, commonly known as turtle vents or static vents, are individual vents installed in specific areas near the top of the roof. Both remove heat and moisture from your attic, but ridge vents provide more consistent ventilation.

  • Can I get a new roof in winter?

Yes, as long as the weather cooperates. We install roofs when the temperature is above 40 degrees because shingles can become brittle and crack during the installation process when it is too cold outside.
