Siding FAQs

  • How can I tell if my siding needs to be replaced?

There’s no set timeline for when siding needs to be replaced. In fact, quality siding that is installed properly can last a lifetime. However, severe weather, moisture issues, or poor installation can sometimes lead to damage that requires repair or replacement.

If you notice cracks, warping, loose pieces, or other visible damage, it may be worth your time to have it looked at. Over the years, the sun can also cause siding to fade. While fading doesn’t necessarily mean the siding is failing, many homeowners choose to replace it to refresh the look of their home. It can also be difficult to match the color of older siding if a repair is needed.

If you’re noticing damage or simply thinking about updating your home’s appearance, we’re always happy to provide a free, no-pressure estimate and an honest opinion on whether a repair or replacement makes the most sense.

  • How long will it take to replace my siding?

A timeframe for replacing your siding is very situational, depending on the size of your home, as well as weather conditions. Typically, a full house of siding could take between 5 to 9 business days of good working weather.

  • Do I need to get a permit for the siding installation?

In most cities, a permit is not required for vinyl siding replacement, but if your city does call for one, we will obtain it.

  • What is included in my siding estimate?

The estimate includes installation of new vinyl siding, as well as a quarter inch foam insulation board behind the new siding, and new accessories including mounts for lights, faucets and outlets, as well as gable vents and dryer vents.

  • Do you offer a warranty on both materials and labor?

Absolutely! The siding products we install from Exterior Portfolio are backed by a Double Lifetime Warranty, meaning that coverage extends to both the original homeowner AND the next owner of the home. That’s a benefit that you don’t often see with other manufacturers, as warranties are often reduced or prorated when ownership changes.

In addition to the manufacturer's warranty, we here at Home Comfort Exteriors stand behind our work with a 25-year workmanship warranty. We take pride in doing the job right and we want you to feel confident knowing your investment is protected for years to come!

  • Do all the colors of siding cost the same?

No. While the colors in our Basic palette are included in our standard pricing, some colors do come with an additional cost.

We use the Market Square line of siding from Exterior Portfolio, which offers three color collections. The Basic palette consists of twelve lighter colors and is included with our standard pricing. The Premium palette offers six medium-toned colors that are generally a little darker, while the Expressions palette features the darkest color options available.

The Premium and Expressions color palettes come with an additional costs, due to the extra pigmentation required during the manufacturing process. If you’re considering one of these upgraded colors, we will clearly outline any additional charges in your estimate so there are no surprises.

  • Do you work with insurance claims?

Yes, we have a lot of experience working with insurance claims. We can go over your insurance documentation with you to make sure that your insurance covers all the required items they need to. There are often instances where insurance has missed required code upgrade items and we can help to make sure that they cover them. At the end of the day, we are on your side and will advocate for everything that needs to be replaced.

  • Why does some siding appear wavy or uneven on other homes?

This is usually a sign that it wasn’t installed properly. Vinyl siding naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes, so it needs room to move. If it is fastened too tightly or the panels weren’t installed with enough space, the siding can begin to buckle or look uneven over time. When installed correctly, siding should maintain a smooth, clean appearance and perform the way it is intended to for years to come.

  • What is a "square" of siding?

A “square” is just an industry term for 100 square feet of siding. Think of this as an area that is 10 feet by 10 feet. It’s the measurement that contractors use when calculating how much siding your project will need and preparing your estimate.
